7 September 2021: RESERVES @ European Conference of Educational Research (ECER)

On September 7, 2021, the Re-Serves project was (virtually) in Geneva at the European Conference of Educational Research (ECER) of the European Educational Research Association (EERA). WP1 – Research action 2  dealing with civic engagement between school and territory was presented and discussed. The presentation focused in particular on the representations of civic and social engagement by teachers and managers of the educational institutions involved, and was an opportunity to exchange insights with colleagues from other countries on the methodology and the emerging outcomes.

2-5 June 2021: RESERVES @ Scuola Democratica II International Conference “Reinventing Education”

During the 2nd International Conference of Scuola Democratica “Reinventing Education”, which took place online from 2 to 5 June, two contributions related to Re-serves (WP1 – Civic Engagement and WP3 – Youth Inclusion) were presented.

Lisa Stillo (University of Rome 3 – WP3) proposed some reflections on the need to rethink the category of NEETs (young people who do not work and do not study), while Francesca Rapanà (University of Verona – WP1) presented some results of the ongoing research on the school-community relations aimed at promoting civic engagement.

14-16 January 2021: RESERVES @ The Italian Society of Education National Congress “The responsibility of pedagogy in the transformation of social relations. History, research and perspectives”

The Italian Society of Education held online its national congress ‘The responsibility of pedagogy in the transformation of social relations. History, research and perspectives’ on 1416 January 2021, which hosted two presentations from RE-SERVES’ researchers on the outcomes of the Systematic Reviews of the literature produced in WP 1 (Civic Engagement) and 2 (Educational Alliances).

Francesca Rapanà (WP1) explored the different practices of school-community collaboration analysed in the literature, focusing on their underlying conceptions of citizenship.

Fabrizio Chello (WP2) proposed some reflections on the process of defining an object of research beyond the so-called “paradigms war”, starting from the results of the review of the literature on adolescents’ antisocial behaviour.

4 December 2020: Presentation at the SIPED International Seminar ‘Italian Educational Research’

Marcella Milana, national coordinator of RE-SERVES, presented the general design and the first outcomes of the project, in particular what emerged from the five Systematic Reviews of the literature already concluded, at the SIPED International Seminar ‘Italian Educational Research: National and International Projects in Debate’, which was held on 4 December 2020 via Zoom.

19-20 November 2020: II methodological workshop. The epistemological and methodological stance

On November 19 and 20, 2020 the research units took part in the II Methodological Workshop to discuss the epistemological assumptions underlying the work of the different research units to highlight continuity across the different units, as well as their specificities.

Continuity was found in a shared vision at ontological, gnoseological and epistemological level, according to which:

· knowledge is always understood as critical-narrative and, therefore, as a relational activity; for this reason, it is necessary to value both research subjects and their meaning-making.

· research aims to understand the phenomena in order to change/intervene/improve educational practices, therefore it has a political value.

· some key words return to outline a common horizon: transaction, interpretation, intersubjectivity, and understanding.

The specificities of the different research units are mainly at methodological level, in terms of instruments for data gathering and strategies for data analysis, which will be discussed in depth in future meetings.

The group took this opportunity to discuss also the ongoing empirical research, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the research project.

16 October 2020: II Internal seminar. The four key constructs of the research project

The four research units met again remotely on 16 October 2020 to take part in the II internal seminar devoted to the sharing of philosophical reflections on the four key constructs of the research project – vulnerability, marginality, friendship and solidarity – and their pedagogical implications.

The texts developed in dialogue between Tommaso Tuppini, Federico Leoni (University of Verona), Alessandro Mariani e Cosimo di Bari (University of Florence).

Afterwards, the research units shared information on the state of the art of ongoing empirical research and required adjustments due to the current pandemic emergency.
