Transgender Studies: Historical, Theoretical, and Methodological Perspectives

What emerges from the encounter between transgender and critical theory? This seminar will offer an introduction to the flourishing field of transgender studies, exploring its origins, developments, and key theoretical questions. By tracing the evolution of the terms “transsexual”, “transgender”, and “trans*”, the seminar will examine the relationship between language, sociocultural transformations, and trans history over the past seventy years. Particular attention will be paid to identifying tensions and points of convergence between trans studies, feminisms, and queer theories, critically examining their theoretical assumptions and epistemological perspectives.

Speaker: Tristan Venturi, PhD in Visual, Performing and Media Arts and member of the PoliTeSse Research Centre.
