Esther Newton Made Me Gay
Esther Newton Made Me Gay explores the life of American anthropologist Esther Newton, a pioneer in lgbtq and gender studies. The film tells her story of awakening to gay life in the 1950’s, the women’s liberation movement and lesbian-feminism, drag culture, and forging a butch identity that for her is in conversation with transmasculinity.
Keenly attuned to the cultural and social forces that shaped her life, Newton guides us through an anthropology of herself, exploring issues of sex and gender identity and their relationship to historical time and feminist politics.
