No to bullying. Yes to LGBTIQA+ rights: a commitment in common and in the municipality

Wednesday, May 17, 2023, 6-8 p.m. – University of Verona, Santa Marta, room SMT01

NO TO BULLYING, YES TO LGBTQIA+ RIGHTS: A PUBLIC COMMITMENT.

Moderator: Lorenzo Bernini and Irene Villa, PoliTeSse UniVr Research Center. Promoted by LGBTQIA+ associations and groups in Verona.

May 17 marks the International Day Against Homolesbobitransphobia, to commemorate May 17, 1990, the date the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses. Since then, LGBTQIA+ people have achieved many recognitions in several countries around the world, including Italy, thanks to the efforts of NGOs and movements that have also managed to change institutions.

But there is still much to be done against homolesbobitransphobia in society, culture, and politics, where new forms of bullying and organized intolerance react to the increased visibility of LGBTQIA+ people. Last October, Verona City Council joined RE.A.DY, the National Network of Regions and Local Authorities to Prevent and Overcome Homolesbobitansphobia.

And for the first time this year, recognizing the political and social work done in Verona for decades by LGBTQIA+ associations and groups and the importance of the services they provide to citizens, the Equal Opportunity Department is promoting a joint program of initiatives entitled “Let’s Counter Bullying, a Common Goal”. The theme, decided in coordination with RE.A.DY, will be precisely countering homolesbobitansphobic bullying.

As part of this program, at the University of Verona, the LGBTQIA+ associations and groups of Verona are organizing the public debate “No to bullism, yes to LGBTQIA+ rights: a commitment in commun and in the municipality. Moderated by the Research Center PoliTeSse – Politics and Theories of Sexuality.
