Full call for applications: Call for Abstracts – Arendtian Counciliarism
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Hannah Arendt’s passing, the Arendtian Counciliarism: Visions and Care for Democracy seminar will be held from June 25-27, 2025, at the University of Verona. This event will bring together scholars to explore Arendt’s concept of a federal council system and its enduring relevance for contemporary democratic thought.
We invite the submission of abstracts addressing a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Hannah Arendt’s critique of modern representative politics and her vision for participatory democracy
- The historical significance and evolution of council systems, from the Athenian polis to the Paris Commune of 1871
- The relationship between freedom and authority in the context of political action
- The role of civic engagement and public deliberation in the formation of a radically democratic society
- Alternative models to the nation-state, including the potential of federalist and council systems as responses to contemporary neoliberalism
This seminar aims to foster a critical dialogue on the theoretical and practical dimensions of Arendt’s political philosophy and its implications for modern democracy. We encourage submissions that engage with these themes and contribute to the ongoing discourse on participatory democracy, institutional frameworks, and political equality.
For further details, including submission guidelines and thematic areas, please refer to the full call for abstracts (Call for Abstracts – Arendtian Counciliarism).
