Security and Defence Studies Laboratory
WAR BETWEEN POLITICS, HISTORY AND LAW
The laboratory is designed to provide students with the tools to understand contemporary conflicts and the transformations of international relations from a theoretical and practical perspective. By situating war in a diachronic perspective, students will develop historical-political knowledge and skills related to the prevention and management of geopolitical, environmental, and social risks.
Terrorist attacks, the Israeli-Palestinian and Middle Eastern conflicts, countries torn apart by warring factions—not to mention the various ongoing forms of war: “deregulated war,” “just on both sides” or for a “just cause,” “total, global war,” war of “chaotization,” or proxy wars. The present state of international relations urgently brings back the issue of war’s return, with all its horrors and violence.
-
What is war? In the first part, drawing on great ancient narratives—from Homer to Thucydides to Rome—we will attempt to answer this question, along with a series of others: What are the motivations behind the outbreak of armed conflict? What moral forces are involved? What is the relationship between violence and politics?
-
How does war evolve in the contemporary world? After exploring the meanings and stakes of war from a genealogical perspective, we will address the question: Why does war occur, and how does it develop in today’s world? What are the instruments, reasons, and territories involved? Finally, what are the possibilities and prospects for peace?
