Adult Education and Community Development. A Policy Ethnography in an Italian Provincial Centre for Adult Instruction (CPIA)

The aim of this project is to shed light on the processes, interpretations and negotiations through which adult education policies are enacted in local contexts.

Overall, the project focuses on the reorganization of the adult education system in Italy, which led to the establishment of the Provincial Centres for Adult Instruction (Centri Provinciali per l’Istruzione degli Adulti, CPIAs) in 2012. More specifically, the aim of the project is to clarify how the Italian policy understands the relationship between adult education and community development and which functions the CPIAs should serve with this regard. Moreover, the study seeks to examine and explain how the educational practices towards adults, especially those related to the functions of socialisation and selection of formal education, are influenced by the changes within adult education policies.

The project embraces an ethnographic approach and involves the participation of two school communities, which are part of the same CPIA and are located in two different neighbourhoods of the same town.
